I wanted to touch on this as I see a lot of varied info around and as a male who has had to shave since I was 17-18 tears old, I'd like to weigh in.
Firstly I'd like to preface this by saying I've tried many various shaving creams, oil, balm, etc. Through a process of elimination, have been able to narrow a simplistic process when it comes to shaving that doesn't cause any irritation, rashes, shaving bumps, etc.
The most effective option I've found is a combination of using a simple emollient based product, specific water temperature (doing this to minimise any chance of irritation), and a good quality razor.
To start off I make this the first step of my routine be it AM or PM. This reduces the risk of sensitivity. I shower allowing the steam from the warm water to slightly raise the hairs from the skin. You don't need to apply/rinse the water over your face, being in the vicinity is more than sufficient.
Once out of the shower damp the face with luke cool water. apply the product of your choice (for myself I will use a simple fragrance-free sorbolene or CereVe PM Lotion). Rinse your razor under warm water as this will reduce the friction when you begin to shave. I start from one side of my working sequentially through the rest of my face and neck. I rinse the excess product again with luke cool water and move into the cleansing part of my cleansing routine.
You can if you're strategic, coordinate your hair growth to specific periods. For example, I will start off shaving every 3 days for a week, then reduce this by 1 day a week. This can assist ensuring it occurs in a less randomised growth.
As you can see I keep my shaving process fairly simple. I can't remember the last time I cut myself or had any type of irritation from shaving and usually get a good few days using this process so hopefully this helps some of you :)
